Rebecca Laws, CMHC
Do you ever feel like a part of you is stuck in the past? Do you experience a sense of not fitting in? Perhaps intrusive thoughts and overwhelming emotions are hijacking your time and ability to function. If so, you might be having a normal response to an abnormal experience. Acknowledging these feelings can sometimes leave you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or shut down. If you’re struggling with trauma, abuse, family relationship issues, or grief, I can help. I specialize in assisting individuals heal from PTSD, family of origin problems, and trauma, while also learning to connect with others and discover their true selves. It’s possible to face the past, live in the present, and hope for the future simultaneously. The self-discovery process in counseling can be beautifully captured by a line from Disney’s *The Greatest Showman*: “I am brave, I am bruised, I am who I’m meant to be; this is me.” Therapy provides a safe space to build assertiveness, cultivate self-acceptance, establish healthy boundaries, and harness your strengths.
I am passionate about the transformative power of this process. It can lead to “aha” moments, spiritual insights, the ability to connect with others in an emotionally safe manner, and a renewed sense of purpose. Peace can be found by confronting various types of trauma and learning skills to navigate your emotional landscape. As described in *The Knight in Rusty Armor* by Robert Fisher, the journey begins with getting to know yourself and understanding your weaknesses.
